Why is it that some people have moles in one lawn but next door other people dont?

This is a question I get asked alot. There are actually a few answers. Number 1 is the food source.. Your lawn may contain a higher count of earthworms and other insects and the moles are staying there because of that.  Number 2 could be your lawn is moist and easier to dig in or already has a mole tunnel network existing from the last mole that was in the lawn the last time. Number 3 is that he just hasnt explored beyond your boundaries yet. Moles are always digging new tunnels and the longer they are allowed to exist in your lawn the more extensive the tunnel system will be.

Calling TRapper of Trappers Wildlife Control is the best way to remove thosr moles and voles from your yard.  He uses traps and is extremely effective in the capture of moles quickly. www.CallTheMoleTrapper.com or (515) 257-0470 call or text is fine

The Voles Are Coming Back Out With A Vengeance....And So Are The Moles

Wow has it been a banner year so far for Voles In Lawn and Moles In Yard calls...

Seems like about every day I am answering questions about mysterious lines or tunnels in the grass in a lawn...people telling me they don't look like moles but that the grass is dying in jagged lines and usually coming out of a landscaping area, flower bed, raised garden, retaining walls, etc. TRapper's Wildlife Control is dealing with voles and moles daily.

Those strange lines are caused by voles...they are using those tunnels so much and eating the grass at the root that the grass blades die and fall over the tunnel creating a harboring, cover for them to run back and forth to their new feeding areas..  Any holes you see close to a sidewalk, steps, concrete patio, or even out in the middle of the lawn serve as denning areas and the trails always "snake" away from them.  Voles need to have cover...you will never see a vole run on top of the grass...they use those tunnels or runs...whatever you want to call them, 100% of the time...it is their safety net.

Solutions to voles is simple... www.CallTheTrapper.com/voles-1.html is the best answer....trapping is the quickest and most sured way to remove the voles...YOU KNOW YOU GOT THEM.  poison can be useful but a note of caution...the poison must have voles listed on the label in order for you to use it legally...just listing mice is not enough since voles are another species separate from mice.  We at TRapper's Wildlife Control DO NOT EVER use poison or chemicals to control any animal.

Moles also are digging new tunnels and frustrating people like you and TRapper of TRapper's Wildlife Control has trapped over 8,700 in his career of 12 years...You can rest assured you have the right mole trapper on the job when using my service... www.CallTheMoleTrapper.com

To Try Poison Worms Or Not To Try Poison Worms for Moles…That Is The Question

Ever since the “mole killer” worms came out known as Talpirid, many of the pest control companies added mole control to their array of services. I mean…how hard can it be…just take the poison, gummy worm look alike and place it in what may appear as an active mole run, charge $300 to $500 for the service because it is a “poison”, then come back to re check the lawn in a week and be down the road to the next sucker in line.  One thing is for sure, no company can put a guarantee on a dead mole.  I have personally caught many, many moles in yards where the poison worm has been used.  The moles just don’t eat it like they advertise they do…Moles like fresh and live meat…They get their water more from the biological makeup of the earthworms, insects, and grubs that they eat…a poison worm is more like a dead worm doing nothing but sitting there and really does not offer a tasty meal.  Some common names for the “poison” worms are Motomco Mole Killer and Talpirid like mentioned above.

At TRapper’s Wildlife Control, we can guarantee a dead mole because we get to see that dead mole.  Also if you pay TRapper’s Wildlife Control $300 to $500 for a mole control program, that means we caught at least 4 to 8 moles that were doing damage in the lawn.  Many times customers only have a couple moles doing the damage.  An average acre of lawn will have 3-5 moles active in it.

TRapper doesn’t like the poison worms for one other reason and it is the biggest one of all.  First and Secondary Poisoning.  One talpirid poison worm has enough poison in it to kill one medium size dog. Say a mole happens to eat the worm, dies, and then a dog….YOUR dog, digs up the mole and eats the mole…what happens to your dog is called Secondary Poisoning.  But The BIGGEST reason TRapper hates the poison worm is because of small children.  Most have had gummy worms before and I have to ask…If you took a talpirid or motomco poison worm and set it down beside a candy gummy worm and offered it to a 1-4 year old kid…would they know which one is bad?  Granted the poison worm should be underground and hidden but what happens if one doesn’t make it all the way underground?  TRapper personally believes this is an accident waiting to happen, unfortuneately.

Mole Trapping is the MOST EFFECTIVE way to control moles.  Dead moles are Guaranteed and with TRapper’s Wildlife Control’s NO Risk Mole Trapping Service, You do not pay a dime until results are given in the form of a body of a dead mole, Period.  No Money wasted and you have peace of mind the mole can no longer do any more damage.  Visit my website at www.CallTheTrapper.com and click on the green “Mole Trapping Service” button to see the prices as well as service details. Call TRapper today to be on your way to a mole free lawn.

Get Rid of the Grubs and Get Rid of the Moles, Right? NOPE, Not Right

Time and time again I hear over and over how people think that the primary food source of moles is white grubs or just grubs in general. Somehow through the periods of time, this biggest myth has made its way through the ranks. If you tell someone something over and over enough soon you begin to believe it even though you really don’t know if it is the truth or not.

So that brings us to the million dollar question…Do Moles Eat Grubs? The answer is YES they do however it is not their primary food source. Grubs to a mole is like going to a fine restaurant and earthworms (which is what they eat primarily) is like going to the buffet. The mole will pick the buffet over the fine dining anyday as he gets more food plus the earthworms are more readily available. Many studies have been completed the last 20 years and all studies have shown that the moles primary diet is the earthworm …..Not The Grub. Grubs are only usually found just about 2-5 inches below the surface of the ground beneath the grass and go dormant during the winter time and since the mole does not hibernate, if it depended on grubs to survive then you would no longer have a mole issue YEARS ago. Earthworms just go deeper when the ground freezes and the mole has the ability to breathe in smaller oxygenated areas…so it follows its food deeper since digging in frozen ground is impossible for the mighty little animal.

So why do people advertise grub control for mole control? So they can make the almighty dollar and it isn’t many times that these companies know the truth…I believe they are misled like many of you and just going with the flow. Trapper’s Wildlife Control kills moles daily on yards that have been treated for grubs in the Des Moines, Ankeny, Pleasant Hill, Johnston, Waukee, Urbandale, Clive, Adel, Ames areas of IA. I find earthworms in 100 percent of those lawns…and only find grubs in about 10 percent of those same lawns.

One way to test your lawn for grubs is to take a small shovel and dig down about 5 inches and pull out a plug of dirt about the size of a small bowl. Sift through the dirt with your fingers to see if you find grubs…do this in about five points of a lawn which being the north, south, east, west, and middle. If you locate grubs, treat for them as they are not good for your grass but will do nothing to control moles.

If you have a bad mole problem and you need help…www.CallTheMoleTrapper.com and contact Trapper through that page to be on your way to being mole free. Trapper does not charge a set up fee and runs a No Risk Mole Trapping Service…meaning if he does not trap the moles, then you don’t pay a dime

Home Remedies for Controlling, Repelling, Getting Rid of Moles….Why Don’t They Work?

There isn’t a lot of home remedies that truly work at solving problems.  Usually they stem from something someone tried years and years ago and it spread to being from tried to working…Kind of like the sentence game many of us have played.  Take a line of 20 people and tell the sentence to the first one in line quietly and have him repeat the same sentence to the next person in line and by the 20th person it usually isn’t exactly what it was when first said.  Many of the home remedies you hear about for removal of moles are just not worth trying.  Juicy Fruit Gum for moles…doesn’t work..moles have teeth that are designed to eat meat…they don’t have molars to chew with and can’t chew the gum let alone try to swallow it…It doesn’t work….Or how about using your car or an engines exhaust hooked up to a hose and “pumped” into the ground.  A mole can travel 80 feet per minute in tunnel already dug so when they sense the gas coming in the tunnel they know their tunnel system like we know our roads and head to other areas of the tunnel and likely head to the one that goes deeper where safety is….gas, especially hot gas like exhaust goes up……not down….the mole waits til the gas fumes are gone and then comes back up.  How about human hair in the mole runs…moles don’t know humans and hair isn’t going to deter them.  Broken Glass….the only thing that broken glass does is cut my hands if I am not wearing gloves when setting mole traps.  Castor Oil spread on lawn will remove moles is a big myth.  Castor oil makes the ground stink for a couple inches…the mole just goes deeper until it wears off and comes right back up…it doesn’t chase the mole away.  Grub control for mole control does nothing since the primary food source of moles is worms…NOT grubs.  How about windmills…the vibration actually brings worms to the surface and in turn attracts moles not repels them.

The correct solution to get rid of a mole is trapping them..That is what we do at TRapper’s Wildlife Control….We guarantee to kill moles and run the service of trapping them.  Visit www.CallTheMoleTrapper.com for more information..  Visit our FAQ page on moles…Watch the Mole Video Page and under the Wildlife Tab click on the Mole Page and you will learn more about this fascinating creature called The Mole

Lines in Yard or Lawn? How to kill moles and voles around Des Moines

Who is seeing lines like this in their lawn?  Guess What.......?  These are not Moles....but rather Voles.  Voles are a mouse-like animal that is more brown in color and its head is more rounded and chunky compared to a mouse.  They generally are outside animals and this damage you see above this post, shows what they do.  They tunnel through the grass under the snow in the winter time and their high energy movement creates "lines" in the yard. The snow is their protective cover in the winter time and when it melts they are forced to retreat back to their spring haunts like landscaping islands, rock walls, kids swing sets that have mulch or sand, etc.  they will create den entrance holes close to what people refer to as "snake" holes.  But we all know that snakes DO NOT dig holes.  Voles damage the lawn by digging out the grass below the dirts surface and eating the grass closer to the root.  Their droppings are usually green in color and will be just bigger than mice droppings.

The pictures you see above were taken today, March 9, 2015 in lawns that TRapper's Wildlife Control is currently servicing.   Voles, once they have taken up residence in your lawn, won't go away once spring comes in but they will reuse those tunnels again once the grass gets more thicker and taller.  Trapping really is the only solution.  While trapping will remove the resident voles, it will not get rid of the animal for good in your lawn.  Anyone who tells you they can permanently keep voles away is a Liar.  Population control of the current animals in your lawn is the correct solution.

Visit www.CallTheTrapper.com/voles.html to see more information about voles

Moles are also very active and TRapper caught the first mole in a new clients lawn today, march 9th, only 5 minutes after setting 5 traps.  here is the pic of that mole seconds after it was caught.  Most moles TRapper catches are within the first 24 hours after he sets traps.  visit www.CallTheMoleTrapper.com to find out more information

Why do I have moles and my neighbor doesn't?

This is a common question I get from my clients and potential clients as it pertains to the habits of moles.  Moles are not generally a picky animal but they do tend to like certain soil types but that is not the primary reason for liking your lawn over your neighbors.  Their diet consists of 85% earthworms and the other 15% make up grubs and other insects.  You probably take care of your lawn by putting nutrients into it using fertilizers.  Also I suspect you are killing out the weeds to help your grass become more thick which in turn holds more moisture which draws in their favorite food source…Worms.   The more food available, the more chances they mole will stay in your lawn, but do remember that moles do not know the boundaries of your lawn and sometimes the mole(s) occupies both yards.  Trapping is the number one solution to resolving a mole problem….I will go into more detail about that in future blog posts.

Moles are one of God's Most Amazing Creatures....Come inside as we discover all moles can do...good and bad

This week I will address the lawn mole issue as it pertains to grubs and what a mole's food source really looks like..

Moles are strictly insectivores...meaning they only eat meat.  They get their water typically from the food they ingest.   Does anyone know what their favorite food source is?   If you guessed grubs you are wrong, it is the small but mighty Earthworm (otherwise known as Night Crawlers).  I know you have heard it before that if you get rid of the grubs you will get rid of the moles but that is so far from the truth.  Grubs and other insects only make up about 15% of a moles diet...so if that was the case a mole would literally starve to death.  Grubs are only around certain times of the year and are only active under about 3-5 inches of soil.  Moles live much, much deeper in the winter and do not hibernate so they would die of starvation.  Earthworms are their main diet making up the 85%.  Let me put it this way, Earthworms are like going to the high calorie buffet and grubs/insects are like going to the fine restaurant.

So why is the rumor spread so much about grubs?  The lawn care companies who haven't done their research and know better as well as the big stores and farm stores can sell grub control but who would buy earthworm control products since earthworms are the best DEEP aeration your lawn can have.  Many of my customers don't have grubs but still have moles...Once I go in to the lawn I can remove moles quickly...most moles I catch are caught within 24 hours after I set traps.

I have been trapping moles for 12 years and have over 8,500 moles to my credit...I Guarantee Mole Catches Or You Don't Pay Me A Dime (or a penny)  My Service area is Des Moines, IA Area, Urbandale, Waukee, Saylorville, Ankeny, Johnston, Adel, Grimes, Polk City, Ames, Boone, Pella, Knoxville, Indianola, Pleasant Hill, Altoona, Clive, Windsor Heights, Indianola, Newton, Colfax, Mitchellville, Mainly Central Iowa
