Why is it that some people have moles in one lawn but next door other people dont?

This is a question I get asked alot. There are actually a few answers. Number 1 is the food source.. Your lawn may contain a higher count of earthworms and other insects and the moles are staying there because of that.  Number 2 could be your lawn is moist and easier to dig in or already has a mole tunnel network existing from the last mole that was in the lawn the last time. Number 3 is that he just hasnt explored beyond your boundaries yet. Moles are always digging new tunnels and the longer they are allowed to exist in your lawn the more extensive the tunnel system will be.

Wow has it been a banner year so far for Voles In Lawn and Moles In Yard calls...

Seems like about every day I am answering questions about mysterious lines or tunnels in the grass in a lawn...people telling me they don't look like moles but that the grass is dying in jagged lines and usually coming out of a landscaping area, flower bed, raised garden, retaining walls, etc. TRapper's Wildlife Control is dealing with voles and moles daily.

To Try Poison Worms Or Not To Try Poison Worms for Moles…That Is The Question

 

Ever since the “mole killer” worms came out known as Talpirid, many of the pest control companies added mole control to their array of services. I mean…how hard can it be…just take the poison, gummy worm look alike and place it in what may appear as an active mole run, charge $300 to $500 for the service because it is a “poison”, then come back to re check the lawn in a week and be down the road to the next sucker in line.  One thing is for sure, no company can put a guarantee on a dead mole.  I have personally caught many, many moles in yards where the poison worm has been used.  The moles just don’t eat it like they advertise they do…Moles like fresh and live meat…They get their water more from the biological makeup of the earthworms, insects, and grubs that they eat…a poison worm is more like a dead worm doing nothing but sitting there and really does not offer a tasty meal.  Some common names for the “poison” worms are Motomco Mole Killer and Talpirid like mentioned above.

Get Rid of the Grubs and Get Rid of the Moles, Right? NOPE, Not Right

Time and time again I hear over and over how people think that the primary food source of moles is white grubs or just grubs in general. Somehow through the periods of time, this biggest myth has made its way through the ranks. If you tell someone something over and over enough soon you begin to believe it even though you really don’t know if it is the truth or not.

So that brings us to the million dollar question…Do Moles Eat Grubs? The answer is YES they do however it is not their primary food source. Grubs to a mole is like going to a fine restaurant and earthworms (which is what they eat primarily) is like going to the buffet. The mole will pick the buffet over the fine dining anyday as he gets more food plus the earthworms are more readily available. Many studies have been completed the last 20 years and all studies have shown that the moles primary diet is the earthworm …..Not The Grub. Grubs are only usually found just about 2-5 inches below the surface of the ground beneath the grass and go dormant during the winter time and since the mole does not hibernate, if it depended on grubs to survive then you would no longer have a mole issue YEARS ago. Earthworms just go deeper when the ground freezes and the mole has the ability to breathe in smaller oxygenated areas…so it follows its food deeper since digging in frozen ground is impossible for the mighty little animal.

So why do people advertise grub control for mole control? So they can make the almighty dollar and it isn’t many times that these companies know the truth…I believe they are misled like many of you and just going with the flow. One way to test your lawn for grubs is to take a small shovel and dig down about 5 inches and pull out a plug of dirt about the size of a small bowl. Sift through the dirt with your fingers to see if you find grubs…do this in about five points of a lawn which being the north, south, east, west, and middle. If you locate grubs, treat for them as they are not good for your grass but will do nothing to control moles.

Home Remedies for Controlling, Repelling, Getting Rid of Moles….Why Don’t They Work?

There isn’t a lot of home remedies that truly work at solving problems.  Usually they stem from something someone tried years and years ago and it spread to being from tried to working…Kind of like the sentence game many of us have played.  Take a line of 20 people and tell the sentence to the first one in line quietly and have him repeat the same sentence to the next person in line and by the 20^th person it usually isn’t exactly what it was when first said.  Many of the home remedies you hear about for removal of moles are just not worth trying.  Juicy Fruit Gum for moles…doesn’t work..moles have teeth that are designed to eat meat…they don’t have molars to chew with and can’t chew the gum let alone try to swallow it…It doesn’t work….Or how about using your car or an engines exhaust hooked up to a hose and “pumped” into the ground.  A mole can travel 80 feet per minute in tunnel already dug so when they sense the gas coming in the tunnel they know their tunnel system like we know our roads and head to other areas of the tunnel and likely head to the one that goes deeper where safety is….gas, especially hot gas like exhaust goes up……not down….the mole waits til the gas fumes are gone and then comes back up.  How about human hair in the mole runs…moles don’t know humans and hair isn’t going to deter them.  Broken Glass….the only thing that broken glass does is cut my hands if I am not wearing gloves when setting mole traps.  Castor Oil spread on lawn will remove moles is a big myth.  Castor oil makes the ground stink for a couple inches…the mole just goes deeper until it wears off and comes right back up…it doesn’t chase the mole away.  Grub control for mole control does nothing since the primary food source of moles is worms…NOT grubs.  How about windmills…the vibration actually brings worms to the surface and in turn attracts moles not repels them.
